A 22-year-old aspiring sports broadcaster who was weeks away from beginning his professional career in Iowa is recovering in intensive care after being shot in a drive-by attack while sitting in his car at a gas station. Tyler Bright, a client of the Sports Broadcast Talent Network (SBTN), was shot Jan. 11 while getting gas in Louisville, Kentucky. According to family members, a bullet entered through the window of his vehicle and struck him in the neck.
Tyler is being treated at UofL Hospital, where doctors determined the bullet damaged his C3 vertebrae. He is able to move his hands, but currently has minimal movement in his legs. He has undergone surgery and is expected to face a lengthy recovery that could include additional operations and extensive physical therapy.
“This is going to be a long road,” family members said in a statement. “Tyler is a strong and determined young man.”
Bright had recently accepted a play-by-play broadcasting position in Iowa and was scheduled to begin Jan. 24. David Brody, a mentor and industry contact who recommended him for the role said Bright stood out not only for his on-air ability but also for his character. “Tyler is a fantastic and kind person,” David Brody said. “I encourage you to support his recovery with a donation, and by sharing his story to spread the word to others.”
Bright’s parents, Jason and Lisa Bright, live and work in Michigan and are currently staying in Louisville to be by his side. Family members said financial support will go toward Bright’s immediate medical care, future rehabilitation expenses and helping his parents remain with him during recovery.
Members of the broadcasting community are being encouraged to support Bright by sharing his story and contributing directly to a fundraising campaign established on his behalf.
Donations to support Tyler Bright’s recovery can be made at: GoFundMe.
