If you’re not getting the job you want, stop asking “Why them?” and start asking “What do I actually offer?”
Employers hire people they can’t afford to lose – the ones who stand out.

I thought about this recently after watching Fernando Mendoza’s ESPN interview following Indiana’s blowout win over Oregon in the Peach Bowl. Mendoza is a true triple threat: talent, presence, and personality. He doesn’t just blend in – he stands out in multiple ways.
That raises an important question for anyone pursuing a career in sports broadcasting:
What are you doing to stand out as a broadcaster?
Because in today’s industry, “good” simply isn’t good enough.
I’ve been coaching a 22-year-old play-by-play broadcaster for a few months. Recently, another one of my coaching clients mentioned that his station was hiring. My guy applied – and he got the job.
At the same time, a 28-year-old broadcaster who had been rejected multiple times by that same station was told his play-by-play still wasn’t strong enough. The station suggested he contact me for coaching.
He never did.
And that leads to the part of this conversation that many young broadcasters don’t want to hear.
A few tips and some extra reps won’t magically land you your dream job.
Doing play-by-play isn’t hard.
Doing it well is.
You can’t fix what you don’t know is broken – and you can’t add what you don’t know is missing.
Too many broadcasters assume that simply putting in more time will eventually open doors. But the broadcasters who get hired are the ones who actively improve, sharpen their craft, and make themselves impossible to ignore.
If you’re tired of watching opportunities go to someone else, then do something about it.
Raise your game. Fix what’s holding you back. Commit to becoming someone who truly stands out.
Because that’s what this industry rewards.
If you’re ready to get the training that can move your career forward, we’re here to help you get there.
